DIY Map Trays

When Styled magazine gave me free reign to produce a DIY project for their magazine, Mum and I jumped at the chance to do something with a map theme! I adore maps... they are gender neutral, beautiful, and informative. Each one tells a story and can be so personal. It was a lot of fun coming up with a theme and color scheme for each tray. It was also the perfect excuse to re-do Mum's thrift store coffee table (seen in the "Table for Two" photo) and I must say that it looks fabulous in her home! It really catches your attention when you enter the room. Have fun with your maps - I would love to see your "worldly" creations!

Welcome to the new and improved EclaireArt!

There are some subtle changes around here. All of the headers have been re-done on the side pages. My goal for the site update was to incorporate social media/subscription options and to create a clean, aesthetically pleasing look that is easy to navigate.

Check out the changes:

The "Portfolio" (Photography & Photo Styling) page is now up to date with all my recent photos (aside from the ones being published).

The "About" page has been updated with the video and more information about photo styling.

These little guys are social media buttons and help give you options for us to connect.

* The first button is for the RSS feed subscription, which is a method of updating you when I do new blog posts.
* The "f" button is for Facebook. If you click "Like" on EclaireArt's Facebook page, you can get notifications in your news feed about new blog posts.
* The "P" button is for Pinterest, an amazing image board site. I literally just got started at 4am this morning, but you can check out the boards I made so far. I created an EclaireArt board, which will just feature photos from this site. I also have other inspiration boards where I gathered images throughout the internet that I thought were appealing and grouped them together. It is a lot of fun!
* The little envelope button is for e-mailing and it will start an e-mail to me in your default program. You can also e-mail me through the contact tab.

Towards the top is a new search bar, where you can search the website alone for key words to better navigate to specific pages.

There is also a "follow by e-mail" bar where you can enter your e-mail in order to receive notifications of new blog posts.

The new "Pet Photography" tab is at the top, which I will update on a regular basis. Just click on the buttons for each pet to see a specific post. I am hoping to do the same thing for the recipe section once I organize it a little better.

Yui now has her own page! I kind of like the dog, you know? I will continue to update future posts she is in at the bottom of that page.

You can also "grab a button" by copying and pasting the html coding and placing it on your own site to link back to mine. - Thank you if you do!

Hopefully these changes to the site will make it easier for you to navigate and subscribe. I have some exciting news to share with you soon. Thanks for stopping by and take care!

The most inquisitive nose in the world.

Our little Yui turns one year old today!

I love this dog.
I ADORE her.
She has absolutely changed my life and I thank God every day for bringing her to me. Yui is quite a character and my husband and I both agree that life would be boring without her in it. She makes me laugh and laughter is such a necessity to incorporate into your daily schedule.

Let me end on this little story about my girl:

For whatever reason, Yui enjoys leaving "presents" in our bed. I think she just likes having a comfortable place to investigate interesting things. Such items have included a mashed up banana, the skin of an acorn squash, and an entire honey mustard packet. My white sheets are not always so white with a puppy around!

One day, I stumbled upon Yui digging intently at my husband's pillow, trying to hide his own sock underneath it. "How cute!", I thought. (She is obsessed with our socks and underwear, so this isn't new). Later that day I received the following message from our friend:

"Thank you for having us over last night. It was so awesome, I only came home w/ *one* sock! :D"

I then unearthed the sock beneath my husband's pillow....and noticed that I did not recognize the brand. I think I cried I laughed so hard!

Oh Yui, keep being you! Happy birthday, little one. Your parents love you!

Pet Profiles: Meet Polly

Meet Polly!

Polly Pocket... how cute is that for a nickname? Her owners are such sweet, down-to-earth people. I felt completely relaxed during our photography session because they made it fun! Polly is a super mellow rescue dog and her parents are completely smitten with her. I was truly touched by this family's kindness and generosity.

A Message to my Furry In-Laws...

I love each of you as if you were my own dogs... you are family to me. Thank you for always bringing a smile to my face through your unconditional love and affection.

We had to say goodbye to Savannah today, but she is in Heaven with her sister, Ginger. For those of you who don't know these dogs, let me tell you a little bit about each of them. They are some of the best canines out there and I am proud to call them family.

Hopey
This little one is much tougher than she looks and definitely doesn't let the larger dogs boss her around! Hope was given her name after she was found on the side of the road on 9/11/2001. She has a very strong bond with her mama.

Savannah
One of the sweetest dogs you could have ever met. Savannah was rescued by my husband's family after she had gone through two owners and was over-bred. All Savannah really needed to be happy was love, treats, and a comfortable spot to rest.

Nutmeg
What an adorable hound dog and a big softie! Nutmeg was found on my in-laws' lawn and they generously took her in. She has now been a part of the family for many years. It is hard to resist touching her velvet ears!

Ginger
Ginger was the alpha dog, pack leader, and protector. She used to love listening to my husband play the piano and had a special connection with him. Ginger passed suddenly a few months ago, but I feel her spirit through her sister, Sage.

Whiskey
I am pretty sure Whiskey is a cat because he has gone through at least nine lives! My in-laws took in Whiskey as a hospice dog back in 2007. He was expected to live only a few weeks. A few years later, Whiskey is still trucking along, happy as a clam (even through a recent surgery). He is obsessed with the tennis ball and squeaky toys.

Sage
Sage is Ginger's real sister, but the two could not be more different! She enjoys being the center of attention and really just loves to be loved. Sage is very intelligent and knows how to outsmart us sometimes! She craves ice cubes and often demands them from the fridge.

My in-laws have taken such good care of these pups. I doubt many other dogs have received as much comfort and love in their old age. I take my hat off to their wonderful hospitality and big hearts!

This kid (ahem, man) is one of my best friends. We laugh, we poke fun at each other, and we talk nerdy together. I kind of dig the dude.

Eighteen is when you are considered an adult. You begin to make important decisions that can alter your path in life. It is a scary time, a hopeful time, and an exciting time. My brother, I hope that your journey is interesting and that you lead a meaningful life. Enjoy the adventure, excel at your passions, and never cease your hunger for learning. Most of all, live your life with purpose and love.

Christmas Recap! Yui's 1st Christmas

So I already did my New Year's post...why am I writing about Christmas again?
ANSWER: Because I am obnoxiously obsessed with my dog and had to share her Christmas jammies.

Yes, we are cruel parents making our dog suffer the indignity of an outfit... but she actually loved her Christmas pajamas and bounced around in them all day without a care. Don't judge us. :)

Pictured above is what we have called "The Christmas Carrot" (yes, that is a carrot with a happy face and bunny ears). It was just too bizarrely adorable to pass up putting in Yui's stocking. She LOVES this thing. We have decided that every year a new Christmas Carrot will appear in her stocking. Whether we can find a replacement with anthropomorphic qualities or not, there will be a stuffed carrot.

My husband was also dead set on getting Yui the largest bone he could find for Christmas. The funny thing? Yui is either terrified of it or ignores the absurdly large bone... and obsesses over The Christmas Carrot instead. It's the thought that counts, Corey. I love you. :)

This Christmas was lovely! Even with the chaos of the buildup before the holidays, I really felt like we relaxed and enjoyed ourselves once the day finally arrived. There was lots of laughter, good company, and delicious food. I was so touched by the generosity among our families. Everyone seemed to seek out really thoughtful gifts. I cherish these moments with both of our families. Christmas day is such a relaxing time with them and I felt blessed with their presence.

My husband somehow did it again...
He completely shocked me with my gift this year. I was in no way expecting it, but he got me an iPad for my business! It has my name and "EclaireArt" engraved on the back... how incredibly thoughtful is this man?! I am absolutely in love with this piece of technology and I am having a blast using it. I now have a way to share work with clients right there in front of them! I am someone who has never cared about having the latest in technology and have gotten along just fine without it... but I am thoroughly impressed with the iPad. Thank you for always believing in me and supporting my dreams, dear husband.

Why, hello 2012!

It has been an incredible year! EclaireArt has evolved so much over the past twelve months since receiving my digital SLR camera last Christmas. The above images are selected highlights of posts over the past year. It is pretty neat for me to see them grouped together like this. I remember each photo shoot - the temperature extremes, the obstacles, and the pure joy of each project. After realizing my passion for photo styling only halfway through last year, I am ready to take on 2012's new challenges in this field. I have exciting news to share with you over the next few months, but the good news will have to wait!

It has also been such a special year because of the furry addition to our family. Our dog Yui has been both a joy and a blessing to us. She makes us smile every day.

Both my husband and family have shown me so much support over the past year and I would not have made it through without them by my side. It is important that your loved ones encourage you in your goals and believe in you. I don't know what I would do without them.

What are your resolutions for 2012? Are looking to simplify your life? Change your career? Update your lifestyle? Adopt healthier habits? I would love to hear about your goals!

I don't know what it is about this year, but I have such an amazing feeling about 2012. May you all have a healthy, prosperous, and adventurous upcoming year. Be good to your loved ones and enjoy every second of life - it is a gift!

Christmas Decor on a Budget

After making my "Good Boy" and "Good Girl" Scrabble stockings last year,
of course I had to make one for Yui this year!
I think she will be quite fond of it once there are treats inside.
Use a heavy duty glue like E6000 to attach the Scrabble tiles.

These candle sticks are very cheap and common in thrift stores.
Each one is so different, so they look nice all grouped together.
Take a look at the prices in Pottery Barn here for pretty much the exact same thing.

If you don't want to put stockings on your mantle, consider using ornaments.
They look whimsical hanging from the mantle at different lengths.

Create the illusion of snow on your pine cones with a little bit of paint applied with a small brush.
Greenery looks fresh on your mantle and is an easy way to bring nature and life into your home.

You can look at my blog post from last year here to get more ideas for holiday decorating. The mantle above is at my parents' home (I wish it were mine!). Mum and I did the decorating together, so it was a lot of fun. How do you like to decorate for Christmas?

She always finds a way to get into my photo shoots regardless of the subject. The images above are some of many that I found of her furry little self forcing her way into my shots.

Even when I'm on a time crunch or she knocks something over, I have to stop and laugh because I find it endearing. It is usually her inquisitive little nose that shows up in my shots. Sometimes I don't even realize it until after I load the photos on my computer!

Can you believe this handsome guy is 13 years old?! He looks fantastic for his age. Charlie is always on the go and would not have anything to do with my camera, haha. This pooch is passionate about his squeaky toy. Charlie also has a special bond with his owner because she got him in middle school.

This is a story about love, family, and the power of generosity. This Thanksgiving, I want you to keep this beautiful family in mind. Be thankful, selfless, and demonstrate LOVE. Life is so very good.

When I found out that my old classmate since elementary school was on a journey with her husband to adopt a special needs child, my heart immediately went out to this incredibly thoughtful family. I couldn't offer them money... but what could I provide? I finally came up with the idea that I could give them photographs to document their son's homecoming. I was terrified because I have never photographed people, let alone children before. My worries disappeared the moment I saw that smile.

Let me tell you a little bit about their story...

Lindsay, her husband Matthias, and their beautiful daughter Emerald felt compelled to open their hearts and lives to a new family member. They openly sought out a child with Down syndrome. Yes, you read that correctly. To CHOOSE a child with Down syndrome shows how selfless this couple is. There are so many precious children that are either aborted or given up for adoption just because they have an extra chromosome. It is heartbreaking.

Through much prayer, the Handrich family discovered a little boy that lived in Ukraine and felt a connection to him. The English name that the adoption agency had given him was Emory, which was one more sign for them that this was meant to be. Emory was the name the Handrichs originally chose for their daughter Emerald when they thought she was going to be a little boy.

They discovered that this poor child also had anal atresia. Knowing that this could cause future complications, they still chose to go forth with the adoption. After saving up and raising enough money, the Handrichs were able to travel to Ukraine. They endured a ton of paperwork, court dates, and 55 days of waiting in Ukraine until they were finally able to bring little Emory home!

I have been keeping up with their blog and it is incredible to see the transformation of this little fellow. He went from staring off into the distance to interacting, smiling, and loving life with his new family. They saved him from a sad fate in an adult mental institution where he would have been neglected and ignored. Now he will get so much stimulation and love that he will grow by leaps and bounds!

There is something special about the sweet nature of children with Down syndrome. The smiles they give are filled with so much joy and warmth. It will be such a pleasure to see him continue to blossom.

I Do! Wait, Not Me!

I helped photograph my first wedding the other weekend, which was quite the experience. I was absolutely petrified of messing anything up since there are no do-overs for this kind of event. I don't think I could handle the pressure of photographing an entire wedding by myself. That being said, I have so much respect for the photographer I was helping out. He was as cool as a cucumber!

The moment I walked into the chapel that morning, I was handed the rings to be photographed. I kept praying, "Don't drop them... don't drop them... don't drop them..." As you can see, they are stunning rings! I tried to be a little different with how I displayed and photographed them. Oh, and in case you were wondering... that marzipan peach tasted all kinds of wonderful.

The bride and groom were very beautiful and relaxed. It was such fun to be a part of their special day! I love seeing couples so happy together.

Ah, weddings... :)

...and then there were NONE!

This is little Henry (or so we called him).
He was the last one to leave our nest and we already miss him dearly!

I am VERY happy to tell you that all of the kittens were adopted out! When I think about it, it is pretty incredible that we were able to find homes for all four of them in exactly a week. If you would like to read about their story, you can find it here.

I want to thank those of you who were instrumental in helping us find homes for these little guys. If you posted it on Facebook, told someone about them, put up a flyer, or offered to foster them, THANK YOU... from the bottom of our hearts, thank you.

Each kitten went to a wonderful home. I would like for all of you to know that Corey and I were quite picky about who we allowed to adopt the kittens. We went through tons of Craig's List responses, interviewed everyone asking questions like, "Will you spay/neuter", "Will the cat be kept indoors/outdoors?", "Will you de-claw?", "What will you do if you do with the kitten if things don't work out for whatever reason?".... etc. If we got even the smallest of a red flag, we had to turn them down. We also did home visits so we could make sure they were entering a safe and clean environment.

I have no clue how we found such wonderful people, because each adopter had something special about them. They were all genuinely lovely people and we felt so happy knowing they went to safe, loving homes. THANK YOU to those of you who adopted our little kittens. I hope they provide you with a lot of love, entertainment, and happiness!

It was so much fun to be kitten parents for a week. We became quite attached to the little ones. It was very rewarding to see their transformation from terrified wild kittens to complete love bugs that demanded our affection. Our dog Yui actually stepped up to the plate as a mother figure, bathing and comforting them. One of them even tried to nurse from her! When I opened the fridge this morning and saw the cat food, I choked up... I am going to miss them so much, but my heart is singing because I know they went to excellent forever homes.

...Now for something a little Halloweeny!

Baked Pumpkin Seeds Recipe

Ingredients
- Pumpkin seeds (kind of necessary!)
- Canola Oil
- Melted butter
- Garlic powder
- Cayenne pepper
- Pepper
- Sea salt (omit if you are using salted butter)
- Rosemary
- Worcestershire sauce
* Amounts all according to taste or preference

Directions
1. When carving your pumpkin, separate the seeds and put them in a strainer
2. Wash all of the excess pumpkin membrane off
3. Allow seeds to drain for 30 minutes
4. Preheat oven for 350 degrees F
5. Spread seeds out on a baking pan
6. Pour a little bit of canola oil and melted butter on top (you just need enough to coat the seeds)
7. Add all of your spices/herbs/sauces and mix well
8. Bake for 20 minutes at 350 degrees F
9. Enjoy!

These little kittens need a home!

They were born wild in our neighborhood and with chilly weather pending, we were concerned for their welfare. My neighbors and I decided to capture them this morning because we were worried that they would not be able to adapt to a home environment if they remained feral (wild). We also don't want them to continue to reproduce. Unfortunately, I am allergic to cats, so my husband and I cannot adopt them. We hope to find wonderful homes for them as soon as possible. They are really beautiful kittens and have sweet dispositions. Please spread the word in the Raleigh, Durham, Cary, and Chapel Hill areas of North Carolina and contact me if you are interested in bringing home one of these little kitties

Meet Kevin!

Doesn't he just melt your heart?! Pink ears, puppy breath, curious eyes...it's not even fair how cute he is. He was a bundle of energy during the shoot! Kevin's Mommy says he is very independent and a serious sleeper. He was named after Kevin the bird from the movie Up, Kevin Barnes the lead singer of the band Of Montreal, and Kevin McAllister from the Home Alone movie series. His owner's favorite food is also...bacon!

I think all puppies are adorable, but there is something especially charming about this little Westie!

Pretty in Pink

I have to admit... I'm not really a pink kind of girl. However, certain pale shades can be quite heavenly. These soft pink roses made me so happy. The closed one had such an intense perfume that I couldn't resist smelling it every time I walked by.

An Interview with Sara Foster

Upon walking into Foster’s Market, you automatically feel relaxed and at home. The food is always superb and the atmosphere is warm and friendly. There are two locations – one in Durham and one in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Both of the re-purposed buildings are architecturally interesting and filled with comfortable seating, unique tables, and quirky artwork. The menu offers a variety of favorites that are tweaked daily depending on what is in season. On any given day you will find local Duke and UNC students, professors, mothers with young children, professionals holding informal meetings, couples, etc. Foster’s Market is a place where you can be comfortable by yourself or with a group of people. One thing is certain – you will enjoy your meal!

Foster’s Market is celebrating its 20th anniversary and the powerhouse behind this success is Sara Foster, an accomplished individual dedicated to good, honest food. Aside from owning both café locations, she is a renowned chef, author of four cookbooks, and a personal friend of Martha Stewart. Sara was exposed to the freshest of ingredients at a very young age while visiting her Grandparents on their local farm in Tennessee. Experiencing work in the large garden, harvesting each season's bounty, preserving fruits and vegetables for the winter, raising hogs, and cooking the wide variety of produce all contributed to the young Sara's culinary education.

Sara began cooking professionally in the early 1980’s. She went on to work as a chef and caterer before graduating from New York Restaurant School. Sara then became a chef at Martha Stewart’s catering business. When asked what Martha is really like, Sara responds warmly that Martha is a very down-to-earth person. She has an insatiable curiosity and is constantly engaged in learning. Martha has been very supportive of Sara's career and has featured her work in her many publications as well as having her on the Martha Stewart Show to cook, discuss entertaining, and showcase her latest cookbook. Knowing Martha Stewart's very high standards, this speaks very well of Sara Foster.

Sara eventually opened her own successful catering company in Connecticut. After a few years, she and her husband were looking for a change of pace and chose to settle in Durham, North Carolina where they bought a farm and achieved the dream of opening a market and café. Thus, Foster’s Market was born. This region of North Carolina, known as the Triangle (Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill) is a foodie’s oasis. The growing interest in local foods is a grass roots movement that has been quickly gaining momentum. Terms such as sustainable agriculture, organic, free-range, slow food, small farm, and seasonal eating are all part of the regional lexicon and dialog here. When it was pointed out that this has been part of Sara's food philosophy for over thirty years, she commented, "Fresh, local food, and prepared-in-season has always been a given in my restaurants.”

Sara’s latest cookbook Sara Foster’s Southern Kitchen (found here) is her first southern cookbook which traces back to her roots and pays homage to her family. In her grandparents’ time, cooking, growing, and preparation of food was a way of life and was done out of necessity. This cookbook is a combination of traditional family recipes as well as a modern approach to technique. Sara defines southern cooking as being focused on ingredients rather than being recipe driven. She also finds today’s southern cooking to be lighter, fresher, and more seasonal. With this being her fourth cookbook and with all that Sara has accomplished in her career, it will be interesting to see what she does next.

It was a pleasure to sit down with Sara Foster and discuss her prolific career. I have been going to Foster’s Market since I was four years old and it will continue to be a fun destination for my family and friends. Not only is the food fresh and delicious, but we also enjoy the unique and creative atmosphere. I have tried many items on her menu, but I have my favorites. I always appreciate the many layers of flavor that is Sara Foster’s signature. By the way, we happen to share an affinity for Jack Russell Terriers (she owns two!). I hope that you all check out her latest cookbook!

The contrast of the savory, crunchy pecans and the refreshing citrus drink will have your taste buds standing up and taking notice. I recently served these at a get together and everyone was guessing at the ingredients and asking for the recipes. They can be found in Sara Foster's new cookbook Sara Foster's Southern Kitchen. I just had to include Yui in this photo shoot because I was making a salty DOG! In the last photo it looks like she is saying, "Oh, is this for me?"

Acorn Delight!

There is something quite charming about an acorn. They are so cheerful with their little beret hats. This is why I have been happy to dedicate this week to the little guys.

I had to put on my thinking cap (or acorn cap?) for some budget-friendly DIY projects involving acorns. I also wanted to offer a different color scheme from the normal fall colors. Hello green, white, and silver!

Here is a little explanation on each craft:

1. Acorn Centerpiece: You can't get much simpler than this! Just pick up acorns off the ground and fill a hurricane vase with a candle. This is a beautiful natural decoration for next to nothing! I must note that this display only lasts a few days as the acorns eventually give off moisture. There are ways to dry acorns in a low oven if you want them to last longer.

2. Acorn Place Card: Make a small slice in the bottom of an acorn using a Dremel tool. Make sure you select an acorn that stands up well on its top. Write your guests' names on a leaf with a silver paint pen.

3. Scrabble Tile Wine Charm: Screw a tiny (11mm) eye-hook into a Scrabble tile. Loop ball chain (the type key chains are made of) and use a connector to finish. You can also find these individual materials at most bead stores and hardware stores. You need at least six inches to fit around a wine stem or beer bottle. Guests can choose their initials to keep track of their beverages. Oak leaves also provide a fun and natural coaster for your drinks!

4. Acorn Mobile: Tie silver thread around acorns to make a whimsical mobile.

5. Acorn Magnet: Glue a heavy duty magnet to an acorn for a fun way to display items on your fridge. Use a strong glue such as E-6000.

6. Acorn Bowl for a Fairy House: My Daddy and I used to make these fairy houses when I was a little girl and we found that acorn caps made enchanting little bowls (Yes, that is a real toad! I had to work quickly so Mr. Toad wasn't traumatized).

7. Acorn Necklace: Remove the cap from the acorn and use a heavy duty glue to re-attach it to ensure it never comes apart. Screw a small eye hook into the top. Use silver or gold Rub'n Buff on the outside of the acorn. Seal it with clear resin to make sure none of the silver rubs off. String it on a chain and you're good to go!

8. Beret Finger Puppets: Use Zots (glue dots) to keep the acorn tops attached to your fingers. Draw with skin-friendly markers and have fun animating them! This is a great craft to do with kids.

The Best Way to Cook an Artichoke

So what does Yui have to do with artichokes? Absolutely nothing, of course! She was just very interested in the artichoke and decided she had to be in this shoot. The weirdo.

I applaud the first person who bravely ate an artichoke. As beautiful as they are, they do not look very appetizing with their intimidating prickly leaves. I have tried cooking an artichoke many ways - boiling, steaming, baking... but I have found that the best way is by microwaving them! It seems to retain the most flavor. I am someone who only uses the microwave for popcorn. I wish I could tell you some sophisticated way to cook them, but this is the method that honestly works.

My husband and I eat artichokes all the time (especially when they are in season and cheaper!). They can be pretty filling when you have one all to yourself. Artichokes are like crab legs in that you have to work hard to get your prize. The delicious heart at the center is definitely worth it!

As someone who loves flavor and spicing things up, I find that artichokes are one of the few things that I prefer to stay as true to nature as possible. That being said, it is pretty much essential that you dip them in butter! :)

If you have never tried an artichoke, I dare you to go out and buy one this week.

The absence of color certainly doesn't indicate an absence of beauty.
Quite the opposite!

This all-white photo shoot was fun and equally challenging. An all-white setting is best achieved by making objects stand out through texture, form, and by using varying shades of white. The subtle hints of green from nature and the brown on Yui's head were the only bit of color I allowed. :)

There aren't many types of food that are naturally white, but they look so lovely all grouped together. I never knew white asparagus and eggplant existed. We ended up roasting all of these items and put them in a pasta - yum!

There is nothing like all-white bedding. It is so soft, romantic, and inviting. Definitely ideal for snuggling and curling up in. White sheets and towels are also practical because you can just bleach them without worry of fading over time.

The first set of images is supposed to depict my ideal afternoon. Books, coffee, flowers, candy, birds... all in a soft white setting. It doesn't get much better than that!

What white items make you happy?

This week signifies a fresh start for me. A clean white slate, if you will. I am optimistic and hopeful about what these upcoming days will bring. Life is a gift!

Celebrating Local Food & Farms

My husband and I live in such a beautiful part of North Carolina. The food scene is particularly vibrant with wildly varied culinary offerings. We so enjoy sampling the many local eateries, especially the growing number of those that celebrate food from nearby farms. Less than a mile from my parents' home is a group of farms that we have driven by for twenty two years. It is hard to believe that one of the most popular malls in the state is also just a mile down the road. Talk about diverse scenery!

The sight of the red barn, the cows peacefully grazing, and crops ready for harvesting have been a welcome part of our local landscape. Mum and I recently stopped by the farm stand to pick up some gorgeous organically grown tomatoes and fresh eggs that had been laid that very day. We were cheerfully greeted by Robin who willingly allowed me to take photographs and answered some questions. She and Steve Herndon live on the farm, raising twenty five black Angus mix cattle, twenty three chickens, and a variety of vegetables. All this while working at full time jobs! Robin is enthusiastic and has great affection for her chickens who have amusing names such as Krispy Kreme (like the donuts), Blondie, and of course the one rooster is Foghorn Leghorn. She explained how each one has a distinct personality. The eggs are simply beautiful, varying in shades of white, ivory, and tan with the Ameraucana hen laying the most heavenly shade of pale blue!

Steve Herndon shared some of the family and farm history and then sent us down the road where his cousin Fred Herndon and wife Cherry have an idyllic farm. Cherry graciously showed us around the property, including their charming farmhouse that was renovated from the original 1910 structure that Fred's grandfather had built. The land is glorious with rolling hills, enormous pecan trees, and woods as far as the eye can see. The Herndons raise cattle and I was fortunate enough to photograph two week-old twins and a two day-old baby calf. Each cow and the one bull is named. Every single animal on both of these farms is obviously loved and tenderly cared for.

Across the road is Herndon Hills Farm where Fred's sister, Nancy Herndon and her family grow blueberries, blackberries and muscadine grapes. We've enjoyed picking fruit here for many years and it has provided wonderful childhood memories for us kids. You can see a pie Mum made from a recent visit here.

Other related families live on adjoining pieces of property in the area. According to research, William Herndon (1649-1722) came to America from Kent, England and settled in Virginia. Subsequent descendants settled in this area of Durham, North Carolina on land granted by Governor Richard Caswell following the Revolutionary War.

Today, how many families in America can claim to have continuously occupied the same land for well over two hundred years? These are people who take the stewardship of their individual and interconnected farms very seriously. As we pulled out of the driveway, we noticed both vehicles had bumper stickers that read, "NO FARMS, NO FOOD." - Indeed!

Family Favorite Hors D'oeuvres

I want to share some of my favorite hors d'oeuvres with you! Each one is relatively easy to make and is quite flavorful. I think it's a lot of fun to create a meal out of hors d'oeuvres because of the variety and serving size.

The crostini di firenze is one of my mum's specialties. The strawberries really add a twist to what you normally expect. They tend to taste even better the next day if you store them properly because the flavors have been married.

The stuffed mushroom recipe is my own experiment. I never toot my own horn....but these disappear quickly! I recommend you give them a try even if you aren't a mushroom fan. Both my husband and brother detest mushrooms, but loved these. They pack a lot of flavor!

The crab won tons are to die for! I did not post the recipe because it is not my own. You can find it here at Sam The Cooking Guy's website. We have made these on many occasions. The dipping sauce is delicious, so don't forget to make that as well. You can find the round won ton wrappers at your local Asian market.

Homemade Peach Ice Cream

This is a really fun and yummy treat to make with friends or kids! The recipe is for each individual serving, but you are welcome to double the ingredients or combine everyone's hard work together when you are finished. Honestly, I think it is best to eat it right out of the bag! Please make sure that your bags are sealed extra well, because you don't want them opening up while you are shaking the bag and combining everything with the rock salt! It is absolutely necessary that you dance during the shaking process.

Peach Buzz!

Mum and I went to the local farmer's market and brought home a plethora of peaches. This cocktail is one way to use this summer's bounty. The beauty of it is that it can be put together ahead of time and frozen, rather than being a slave to the blender when you should be enjoying your guests' company. Put it in mason jars and greet your guests at the door with a spoon and a straw.

I have also made this in martini glasses, let it melt a little, and put freshly chopped peaches on top. I hope you enjoy this icy summer treat!

P.S. Stay tuned later in the week for my peachy dessert!

Revision: I did not mention how much ice to add, but please fill the blender to the top with ice or to your liking depending on consistency. If do you fill it to the top with ice, this makes it similar to an adult Slurpee.

Lavender Picnic with a Furry Guest

YOU MUST DO WHAT MAKES YOUR HEART SING.

I was trying to think of the next photo shoot to add to my portfolio when Mum came up with this idea. I am tickled pink (or lavender?) with how everything came together! This certainly was a collaborative effort with Daddy picking the blackberries and blueberries that morning and Mum baking the delicious finger lickin' pie! The rest of the items were honestly just things that we already owned. The Anthropology champagne flutes are the ones we used in our wedding toast. I found that delightful iron ant at an antique store a while back. He was determined to crash this picnic!

At the last moment, I decided, "Why not throw Yui in this shoot? Hey... let's put her in a wine crate!". She was a little angel and just sat there. This deserved a treat in the form of a baguette. I have to pinch myself sometimes because I can't believe this adorable little girl is mine!

For some bizarre reason, Mum and I don't see this as work. Gathering just the right items, sweating our bums off in the heat, swishing flies away from pie... yeah, this is how we know this is what we are meant to do...because we love it!

P.S. Did you notice that Yui's tongue is sticking out in the first picture? :)

Romance in the Forest

There is something both enchanting and romantic about the forest. I can think of few things more splendid than being surrounded by nature, the scent of the earth, and the calling of the birds. That tree... it was so spectacular that I needed to photograph it!

I had this idea for a table setting in my head for a while and finally decided to do it. This photo shoot was so much fun and my mum was a tremendous help! We actually lugged my coffee table out there in this crazy hot weather. I was in my parents' yard shoveling moss the day before...oh the things I do when I get my mind set on something! As we were driving to the spot to take photos, we were frantically looking for queen anne's lace flowers which had been growing abundantly on the side of the road. We planned on using them in the cloche arrangement. Finally, we spotted some next to a church. Amongst the flowers, we discovered little blackberries! It was as though God was leading us to this spot as the blackberries truly made the arrangement!

A Succulent Meal for Two

I just can't get enough of these succulents! I think Corey is going to roll his eyes if he sees another one enter the apartment! The lovely ladies at Southern Weddings had a charity yard sale a few weeks ago. Mum and I snatched up these very versatile silver chargers that you see above. Immediately, this setting popped into my head. The silvery green color of the succulents are a perfect pair with the pale aqua napkins and silver accents! Corey and I enjoyed a peaceful meal for two that night. :)

An Update on Yui

Almost three months ago this little girl came into our lives. From the moment we saw her, we knew she was special!

However, I must be honest with you...at first it was hard. Scratch that. Extremely difficult. I feel compelled to write the following to new dog owners and especially ones with puppies that are teething. Hang in there. There is light at the end of the tunnel!

Our little Yui was an expert at teething (most likely a terrier specialty). By that, I mean relieving the pain in her mouth through sinking her teeth into our skin and clothes. She would jump up and attach herself to whatever was available.

One time it was my pants.
Which came down to the ground. On a walk. With a man behind me. Seeing everything.

For a time we wondered, "What have we done?!" We knew raising a puppy would be challenging, but we had no idea it would be this difficult (wait...we got a Wire Fox Terrier/Jack Russell Terrier mix...we were INSANE).

Throughout the next couple of weeks, we remained consistent with her, continued loving her, and never gave up on her. As our sanity waned, we started to notice a change in our little girl. She began to hurt us less and show more affection. Slowly, she transformed from an attacking fluff ball to an adorable love machine.

What is my point in telling you this? Don't give up on your dog. No matter what behavioral problem you may encounter with your pup, you must persevere in finding a solution. I now understand why so many dogs are given up to shelters and it is not because of the dog. It is because the owner did not give their all in finding a remedy to the situation. Would we have given our little Yui back to the shelter? NEVER. You must hang in there and you will get so much more out of your little friend than you will ever expect. Demonstrate patience, love, and hope to your dog. They are excellent at reading us and can tell when we are frustrated or angry with them. It is so important to be positive!

I have heard that rescue dogs seem to know what fate they were saved from and they become especially affectionate companions. I believe this to be true with all of my heart. Yui makes us smile every day and I don't know what we would do without her now. She is growing up to be such a sweet and loving little dog.

My Mother-in-Law's Graduation from Culinary School!

My mother-in-law recently graduated from culinary school and we are very proud of her! Believe me when I say that completing culinary school is no simple feat. She was required to tackle intensive hands-on training, written assignments, and 6 month internships in between her regular schooling. She has already landed a job and is working hard as we speak - talk about industrious!

The graduation ceremony looked out on Vermont's beautiful mountains and the weather was perfect for that day's festivities. Previous NECI graduate Alton Brown gave a humorous and insightful speech. He is the host of "Good Eats" as well as the host on "Iron Chef America" (both seen on the Food Network). The prepared food for the graduation was nothing short of amazing. Please stop drooling over the dessert pictured above (yes, it was as delicious as it looks!).

Corey and I had a wonderful time in Vermont celebrating with his mom, dad, and the rest of the crew. It reminded me yet again of how fortunate I am to be married into such a lovely family and extended family. Vermont is absolutely gorgeous in the spring/summer and I was overdosing on the scenery the entire time I was there. The photo above is from a bike trip we took on a trail right down the road from their house. I felt like I was in Scotland again.

Birthday Surprises

My parents got me this wonderful Yui cake! Um, ADORABLE!
The boys seemed to have fun in the pool being well, boys.

Like I mentioned in my previous post, I will be jumping back in time to share a few recent events with you. My very sweet husband threw me a surprise birthday party! During that day, my mother-in-law took me out to the movies and we had such fun together. Little did I know, Corey was using this time to gather everyone together at our apartment! I was completely shocked and very touched when I opened the door (yes, in that order!). :) My parents got decorations and mum cooked a ton of fantastic food. I really enjoyed myself and I felt loved... It makes me smile just thinking about that day.

Corey later shocked me with another present... a macro zoom lens for my camera!!! That man is too darn good to me. I am so grateful that he believes in me and he has always cheered me on. I am super excited to use this lens in my upcoming photo shoots!

Thank you, everyone... for making my day special. It meant so much to me.

Why, hello! I am sorry for disappearing over the past month. There have been some interesting changes in my life and I needed some time to just clock out. However, I am back for good and I will be playing catch up on the blog and posting on a few things that happened over the past month. My parents share a love of flowers and horticulture.

My parents are high school sweethearts and started dating their sophomore year, so these two have actually been together for 38 years! Today is their 30th wedding anniversary, which is quite a milestone and a reason to celebrate! My parents have discovered the perfect balance in life and in their relationship, so I really look up to them. They definitely know how to be silly together and laugh!

Our One Year Anniversary!

Was it really a year ago tomorrow that I was walking down the aisle towards my best friend? The images from that day are so clear in my mind. The romance, the atmosphere, the dancing, the happiness... I get giddy just thinking about it!

This has been by far the most rewarding year of my life. Corey makes each day brighter and I feel so blessed to have someone like him by my side. While I only have one year of marriage under my belt, I feel as if I have learned so much in this short period of time.

Here is what I believe is the key to a happy marriage:

Laugh. A LOT.
Take long walks together.
Remember that you are always a team.
Do not stress over money.
Always put your spouse's well being before yours.
Do small, special things for each other.
Show respect for one another.
Do not let a day pass without letting them know that you love them.

I look forward to seeing where our lives will take us together. Our journey thus far has been an adventure! I love you, Corey!

Meet Yui

She often sleeps on her back with her legs sticking up in the air.

This is right after we picked her up.
She was soon transferred to my lap where she snoozed away the rest of the trip.

As you can see, we recently acquired a new furry family member. We have been thinking about getting a dog for a long time and searched all of the animal shelters, SPCAs, and pounds throughout the area. It was our mission to find a smaller dog that would be comfortable in an apartment setting. We were almost losing hope when my husband came across this little one's face online. We knew instantly she was the ONE. She was surrendered by her owner to a daily kill shelter along with her mother and two sisters. It was really important to us that we rescue a dog rather than obtain it from a breeder. After battling at least 25 other interested potential owners and an 8 hour round trip to Asheville, she was ours.

Her name is Yui (rhymes with "chewy"). We went through many Japanese names, but this one felt right. She has been an incredibly silly, challenging, independent, naughty, intelligent, and adorable addition to the family. We are working hard to be consistent and loving parents.

Would you like to take a guess as to what mix breed she is? We definitely see Jack Russell Terrier, but we don't know where the soft, fluffy coat came from. Westie? Poodle? Maltese?

Romance

It encompasses the feeling of romance.

Flowers leave a soft perfume in the air.
You feel alive and begin to notice all of the curiosities within nature.
Little birds play their favorite tunes for you.
Lace and sundresses seem like the only appropriate attire.
Flowers bloom in colors you didn't know even existed.

Yes, this is my favorite season.

The Raleigh Flea Market

It would be neat to fill the walls of a coffee shop or a bar with these old license plates. I'm sure it has been done before!

These suitcases looked so charming stacked together.
You never know what you will find at the flea market. Even if you don't purchase anything, it is still fun to look at old items such as these shaving brushes.

We are very fortunate to have a fantastic flea market in Raleigh and I have enjoyed my visits there since I was a child. It is located at the North Carolina State fairgrounds and you can find more information about it here. I just love perusing through old items and wondering about the stories behind them.

At our flea market, you can find pretty much anything you can think of... sterling silver pieces, hand made linens, beautifully crafted furniture, vintage postcards... the list goes on and on. Even if you leave that day without having purchased a single item (aside from a hot dog, of course), you feel content and satisfied. It is also quite fun to people watch and you are guaranteed to meet a ton of sweet dogs. I even saw a ferret on a leash this past time!

I hope you are able to venture out to a flea market near you soon. You never know what treasures you will find or sights you will see. It's all about the thrill of the hunt!

The 1,000 Paper Crane Project

My heart has literally been aching since the earthquake and tsunami hit Japan. I have a special place in my heart for this country and it has been shocking to learn of the amount of devastation and hardships that many Japanese have endured. They remain in my prayers each day.

These events have put things into perspective for me. No matter how rough you think you have it - imagine losing your home, your loved ones, your livelihood. These things were taken in an instant because of this catastrophe, so we must count our blessings each and every day that we are on this planet. Always put your best foot forward, appreciate your loved ones, do not go to bed angry, and strive to do the right thing. Life is precious.

The 1,000 Paper Crane Project

Being just one person, I have struggled with how to make a difference. My father gave me the brilliant idea to use my blog as a catalyst to help raise money and awareness.

The ancient Japanese tradition called "senbazuru" states that when someone folds 1,000 paper cranes, a wish will be granted. This is often done to ask for recovery from an illness or injury. While I know that these cranes will not heal all the wounds of Japan right now, they are a country of tradition and it is my hope that they will find strength in such a gift.

My idea is to fold a paper crane for each dollar raised for the charities below. My goal is to fold at least 1,000 cranes. For example, if you donate $100, I will make 100 cranes, $10-10 cranes, etc. After you donate, please leave a comment on this post with the amount that you donated so that I can keep track of how much has been given. You can remain anonymous if you wish. This is going by the honor code, so please be honest about your donation amount. I need your support on this and I hope that we can encourage each other to donate to a good cause!

After creating the 1,000 cranes, I will ship them to an orphanage in Japan that was affected by the earthquake and tsunami.

Below are three charities that I have researched and donated to myself. These charities are committed to using ALL designated funds specifically for Japan, so be wary of other programs if you are intent on donating strictly to this cause.

Two Ways to Set a Table with Cherry Blossoms

Five years ago today, my best friend asked me to be his girlfriend. During our courtship, we spent countless hours at a nearby park after classes. These gorgeous cherry blossoms trees were blooming during this time, so they will forever remind me of falling in love with my husband.

Personalized Votives

Maps can add visual interest to a wedding. Locations that are personal to the couple can be used for escort cards and their corresponding table "destinations". On a smaller scale (such as a dinner party), guests can have fun finding their seats by votives that depict map locations that are specifically chosen for them.

You can cover coordinated matchboxes by measuring and cutting paper to fit around the box. Make sure to leave one side of the striking surface uncovered. Use double sided tape or decoupage. These may also be used as favors and are a fun way to inject a little of your own style into an event.

Instructions:

Glass votives can be found at any craft store and the smaller ones are sold in packs. You will first need to create a template. For votives with even lengths on top and bottom, just measure around the circumference, adding 1/4 inch to the width. Next, measure the height, draw these dimensions onto clear plastic (I used a report cover), and cut them out. This is your template.

For votives that taper from top to bottom, there needs to be a slight curve in the template. Wrap a piece of paper firmly around the votive and trace along the top and bottom edge of the votive onto the paper. Unroll the paper and cut out the shape, adding a 1/4 inch to width. Trace onto plastic and cut out your template.

You may cut with straight edge scissors or try pretty, scalloped scissors. Attach the paper to the votives with double sided tape or for a more finished look, decoupage with 2-3 coats of Mod Podge.

This is a simple DIY craft project for a dinner party or wedding reception. Mum and I decoupaged about a hundred of these for my wedding. We used Japanese washi paper in the cherry blossom motif seen above. They look lovely grouped around the centerpieces or marching down the center of a long table.

This is my favorite room because it is so peaceful and serene. I was aiming for more of a traditional Japanese design with a hint of my own style. The room does not have a lot of items in it and follows the "less is more" approach, which makes it very relaxing to be in.

Remember this dresser? I posted about it here. It cleaned up quite nicely.
The screen hides our desk area so it isn't a distraction in the room.

I was fretting over the fact that I could not find decently priced nightstands, so I decided to make my own! I love these floating shelves because I can easily vacuum underneath them and they prevent me from storing junk. There is enough room for a lamp, book, and water, which is all I really need.

I like the organic shape of this vase.
It is pretty obvious that I love birds, isn't it?

Talk about an eclectic mix. Here is where we spend the majority of our time relaxing.
We painted all of the accent walls the same color, but it is interesting how different it looks from room to room as well as during various times of the day. The bedroom/bathroom take on more a green-blue tint while the living room/kitchen is more of a blue-green.

I reupholstered this chair after picking it up for next to nothing at the GoodWill. The original fabric was drab and horribly stained. Armed with a staple gun, batting, and new fabric, this puppy was done in no time. (Okay, I'm lying. Reupholstering is not as easy as it looks and I actually had to take the dang thing apart. I admit that quite a few naughty words came out of my mouth when I worked on
this project).

The "tea table" (pictured on the right and below) was a labor of love. I came across this Japanese tea crate from the turn of the 20th century at the Raleigh Flea Market (Eddie Ross, you need to visit here!). The outside was covered in patterned paper, but it was badly stained and peeling like crazy. If you open it up, there is a beautiful scene of Japanese women picking tea leaves and the interior is lined with tin. I sanded off the outside paper to reveal the lovely wood underneath and then applied a few coats of polyurethane on top. After that, I drilled through the tin to attach the small table you see underneath it ($3 at GoodWill!) so that the box could have legs. I then had glass cut to fit perfectly over the top and the back. This protects the graphics and also allowed me to create a little zen sand garden inside. It took a bit of elbow grease, but it is definitely a conversation piece.

The coasters are actually glass tile samples. Each one is different, so you can quickly figure out
which drink is yours.

I love cooking for my husband, so being in the kitchen makes me happy.

I picked up these 1950s teacups a few years back with Mum and Aunt Lana at a GoodWill in Boca Raton, Florida. They are now my favorite part of the whole kitchen.
In case you are wondering, that is a whisk (chasen) used in the traditional art of
the Japanese tea ceremony.

I'm so glad I was able to reuse them.

"Almond Blossom" is my favorite painting by Van Gogh, so I snatched this plate up in a jiffy when I found it at the GoodWill. These little Martha Stewart sauce dishes are great for putting your

I was so anxious (desperate, longing, and impatient are other appropriate words) to have our own little place together after we got married. Now we have been here almost a year and I could not be happier. I went decor-crazy when we first moved in and it hasn't changed much since. What style is it? I like to call it vintage meets modern meets Japanese meets zen meets eclectic meets serene meets cheerful meets contemporary meets retro. One word sums it all up: HOME. It feels like home to me and I could not imagine a better sanctuary for my husband and I to relax in.

Pretty much everything you see in our apartment was obtained second hand aside from the bed, couch, breakfast table, and piano. This is due to Craig's List runs as well as many trips to flea markets, thrift stores, and antique shops. I included a lot of prices and where I got items from in this post because I really want to share that you don't have to spend a lot of money to decorate your home. You just need a little bit of imagination and a willingness to search for the items that suit your taste and make you happy. I can't tell you how many times I left the thrift store empty handed, but the times I scored something really special were well worth it. With an open mind and patience to shop at alternate types of stores, you can furnish a home. It is also important to look at what you already own and see how you can re-purpose it. Consider it recycling at its finest!

Our apartment is tiny (718 square feet, including the rather large porch) and I wouldn't have it any other way. It was a challenge to merge everything that my husband owned as well as my items into one household. After living in the same home for 20 years and then having a room during college, I had accumulated quite a bit of stuff (crap). I was forced to pare down my personal belongings, which was incredibly freeing. I LOVE not owning a bunch of material items! It can really bog you down, but now I know where everything is (and no, it is not hiding in my closet!).

I can confidently say that I will always want to live in a small home, even when we have children or if we are able to afford a large house some day. It encourages you to be closer to your family and why on earth would I want to clean a huge house anyway?!

Now off to the thrift store you should go, to find some treasures to feather your own nest!

Tea, Anyone?

Do you know how healthy tea is for you? There is a reason why this wonderful treat is the second most consumed beverage in the world (after water, of course). Aside from its delicious flavor, it is also a great alternative to coffee if you need your caffeine fix. My Scottish grandparents faithfully drank tea every evening as a night cap, so I came by my love of tea honestly.

So what are the health benefits? It contains high levels of antioxidants, which is great for protection and fighting against diseases. Tea also contains fluoride, which is excellent for your teeth. High quality loose leaf teas are the most healthy for you, but don't don't shy away from bottled tea as it still is much better for you than sugary soda.

After you finish drinking your tea, don't throw away the bag or leaves just yet! You can use it as a compress over your eyes to relieve puffiness. Wash your hair with it to bring out its natural shine. It has also been proven to help acne if you rinse with it after washing your face with water. I have actually used tea as a marinade in cooking before. It is an interesting alternative to herbs and spices.

White tea, black tea, green tea, oolong tea, chai tea, hot tea, iced tea. With all the types, flavors, and methods of drinking tea, you shouldn't get bored any time soon. I'm about to brew a pot, so why don't you do the same and let's drink to better health!

Valentine's Day in Kauai

Neither of us had tried piña coladas until Hawaii and we fell in love with them - yum!

Pad Thai that doesn't taste like cat pee! (read below before you think I'm insane)

We had these parfaits on our honeymoon that were to die for. I tried to imitate them for our Valentine's Day dessert.

We switch off who is in charge of Valentine's Day each year and it was my turn this time. I decided to recreate parts of our honeymoon since we have such good memories from that trip. I greeted Corey at the door with an "ALOHA!", plopped a lei around his neck, and handed him a piña colada. Playing on the television was a slide show of pictures from the honeymoon along with memorable music from our trip.

We had the most amazing meals on our honeymoon. I couldn't believe how delicious the food was until I ordered Pad Thai one night. It smelled and tasted like cat pee (or what I would assume cat pee to taste like). We politely asked for a doggy bag and left a nice tip anyway. We laughed so hard about this meal disaster and I'm actually glad we had at least one bad meal on the trip. I always like something to laugh about! Anyway, I decided to make an attempt at pad thai as a joke, seeing as I was going with a theme here. I was skeptical, but it actually turned out pretty yummy! Corey says it's one of my best meals to date, so that made me happy.

Free gifts that are from the heart are my favorite! We tried something new this year and wrote out 100 reasons why we love the other person and presented them to each other. I was so touched and cried happy tears while reading mine. We both exclaimed over how easy it was to come up with the 100 reasons. I felt like it was a very special gift to each other and I think it both made us feel appreciated.

The weather was so warm and beautiful yesterday that it seemed like even God was trying to give us a little bit of Hawaii for Valentine's Day. :)

The New & Improved Eclaire Art!

Welcome to the fresh, new Eclaire Art!

It was definitely time for a change. So what is new? The overall design, banner, photo signature, and tab section. Also, I have FINALLY figured out how to make the images bigger in posts! The banner was so much fun to design and create. My inspiration came from the beautiful lanterns in the N.C. Museum of Art gift shop. I went for a monochromatic look because it really makes the photos within the blog pop (Okay... it is also because I am in love with this color...).

I feel refreshed and rejuvenated and I am ready to post post post!

Down Memory Lane

We put this vignette together so that residents could remember some of the items from around the time their children were small. We hope this will bring back good memories for them.
Everything was securely attached, placed in a shadow box, and hung up on the wall.

The little boy figurine looks mischievous!
I'm so happy we found this paper because it went together perfectly.

I adore the art in these vintage ads! We ended up framing them and putting them in the seating areas.

Of course Frankie had to be included. These records turned out nicely when framed.

The company I work for not only does staging work, but interior design and permanent display as well. One of my favorite projects we did a few months ago was for an assisted living center. My boss had already decorated the entire facility before I even joined the team, but the retirement community contacted us again and asked if we could find some vintage items to decorate the memory care unit.

So Mum and I set off to "work" doing something we love most: vintage thrifting! We searched antique stores all over to put together the vignettes and items pictured above. We also found an old vanity and equipped it with vintage hairbrushes, combs, and perfume bottles. My boss scored a lovely 1950's wedding dress and put it on a mannequin. One of the residents described her own wedding dress to me after seeing it.

The whole goal of this project is to encourage these elderly residents to travel down memory lane. These areas are set up like stations where they can either interact with objects from the past or discuss old memories that may emerge. My Grandmother had Alzheimer's disease, so this really hit close to home for me.

During the several days of installation (and putting up Christmas decorations later on), I really enjoyed getting to know some of the residents and hearing their incredible stories. These people have such wisdom and experience in life. We could all benefit from taking the time to listen to the elderly.

The Blessing of Friendship

Abby gave me this beautiful silver dipped leaf necklace and it reminded me of the concrete leaf imprint I saw on one of my walks. Nature can be stunning even when it's not in its natural form. :)

My best gal pal (also the Maid of Honor in my wedding) is in Ireland attending animation school right now. I miss her dearly, but I got to Skype with her the other night! I think she is incredibly brave to depart from her comfort zone and live in another country. Her spontaneity has led to such adventure and her photographs are breathtaking. European travel and immersing yourself in a whole new culture is life changing.

Talking with Abby is always a breath of fresh air. I love people who are positive, genuine, kind, and enthusiastic about life. She is all of these things as well as beautiful on the inside and out. I know we will be reading her name in the credits some day. This girl has talent!

Why don't you raise a toast in honor of your best friends tonight? I know I will. :)

Hello New Year, Goodbye Clutter!

I wrote the following article for my boss and our home staging/interior design company. I figured it may be beneficial for anyone rather than just those who are trying to sell their homes. I hope you feel motivated to confront your clutter after reading this!

Hello New Year, Goodbye Clutter!

People often think of the New Year as a fresh start and a chance to improve their lifestyle. De-cluttering seems to be at the top of the list these days. Don’t wait for spring cleaning to instill these new habits. Tackle your clutter now and feel less burdened by your junk in 2011.

This lifestyle change can be useful towards selling your home, staging, or just keeping your sanity. Even if you do not plan to sell in the near future, you will be thanking yourself for implementing these beneficial routines when you are actually ready to move. Note that clutter is not a result of lack of space within your home; it is a behavioral problem of keeping unnecessary items.

Taking on different rooms or sections of the house one at a time can make the task seem less intimidating. It is easy to get overwhelmed, so perhaps work on just one room for the entire week. Don’t set unrealistic goals for yourself or you will be left frustrated. Always have three items on hand while you de-clutter your home; a bag for trash, a bag for charity items, and a bin for things you want to keep and need to organize. The Goodwill and Salvation Army are fantastic organizations to donate your items to. You are contributing to a good cause and don't forget that you can get a tax deduction for donating. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure… but let’s focus on getting rid of your trash!

Paper seems to be a major culprit in clutter and can be the most difficult to organize. Invest in a filing cabinet (or two!) so that you can easily find those important papers you are looking for rather than searching through piles for hours. Once you organize all of your papers and put them into this new filing system, pick a day/time of the week that you will select as your paper organizing time. On that day, you will go through all of the junk mail, receipts, bills, sticky notes, and other paper materials that you have accumulated throughout the week. If you are able to stick to this schedule, you will no longer be swimming in paper. Don’t forget to recycle!

Tchotchkes, everyone has them. Look at your knick knacks and ask yourself if they are truly worth something to you. There is nothing wrong with sentimental attachment to items, but only keep a few of the things you really cherish. A good rule of thumb is to ask yourself, “Have I looked at or used the item in the past year?” If you haven’t, why on earth do you need it collecting dust under your bed? Answer: You don’t! Be brutal with yourself or ask a friend or family member to help you who will be ruthless.

Sometimes you need to get to the root of the problem as well. While shopping, ask yourself, “Do I really need this? Is this either a useful item or something that I could forever put on display in my home to be admired?” Employ the “one in, one out” method. If you purchase a new pair of shoes, an old pair of shoes must go out. In the end, mindful shopping will leave you, your home, and your bank account much happier.

Getting rid of junk is freeing, relieving, and empowering. Don’t allow material items to bog you down. The serenity of walking into a well-edited home with space, purpose, and a few items of beauty on display is refreshing to the mind and spirit. Life should be about the memories and experiences you partake in, not the amount of items you own.

May 2011 be a year of positive change for all of us!

Connor is 3 months old and I am almost 7 here. Look at his precious little bunny face!

My little brother...
is not so little anymore.
However, he will always be my little brother.

We are almost 6 1/2 years apart, but we are incredibly close considering this age difference. We share many interests (specifically nerdy ones) as well as a similar sense of humor (which I must note is quite bizarre). This kid is a genius. I can talk to him about anything and I know he is destined for an amazing future.

You know what I love? My husband and my brother get along like peanut butter and jelly. They have their own inside jokes and appear to be talking in a different language at times. When they are spewing randomness back and forth to each other, I just smile to myself because it pleases my heart.

Siblings and friends for life.
Happy birthday, little bro.
I love you.

A Fresh Start

I simply cannot believe it is already a New Year. 2010 was by far the best and most life changing year for me. I got married to the love of my life, started a new job, moved into a new home, and learned how to be a wife. I am almost sad to see 2010 come to an end because it was so excellent, but I always have high hopes for the New Year.

While we can start fresh at any time, people always seem to use the New Year as an official booty kick to consider modifying their lives, picking up good habits, and reflecting over their ambitions. Let me note that there is absolutely nothing wrong with this mindset. Just allow me to give you this advice:

Don't forget to live in the moment.

We are always going to be improving upon our lives and ourselves, so it is important to stop and smell the roses every once in a while. Dreams are important, but there is nothing like now. Don't live your life in regret. Live it appreciating what you have in the present and you will find happiness within yourself.

I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas

It is incredible how expensive wreaths can be in stores, so why not make your own? I bought a styrofoam circle to use as a base and wrapped white garland around it. Then, I twisted wire around the ornaments and stuck them into the styrofoam, which will make it much easier to pull out rather than if I had used glue. This will be helpful if (Heaven forbid) one breaks. Et Voila! An easy, cheap wreath. I love that it looks somewhat retro. A big thank you to my mum who helped me with the bow!

I was so excited when I found these stockings that perfectly match our tree skirt. However, they were just too plain, so I hot glued the scrabble tiles on. Corey loves to point out that his stocking is worth more points!

I picked up each of these containers at different thrift stores for about $1 and put in different types if peppermint candies. This is a very cheap and tasty decoration.

Ornaments in a glass vase make such a pretty display.
Martha Stewart's leaf plates/bowls look really pretty when placed together and they are perfect for appetizers.

Mum made me these adorable and delicious cupcakes for our party.
The peppermint was a welcome topping!

Corey and I had a lot of fun putting together Christmas words for this. I used heavy duty glue to permanently attach the scrabble pieces and magnets on the back. It is hanging on our AC unit so it is slightly less of an eye sore during the holidays.

We had an Ugly Christmas Sweater Party and here are some of the best sweaters of the night!

I thought of this idea for the party and it was a lot of fun.
Instead of a blindfold, we used a Santa hat!

I got frustrated looking for a pretty tree topper, so I decided to make my own. I made a cone out of sturdy white felt and then hot glued coffee filters to it (talk about cheap!). It looks really pretty when the light shines through it.

Even though this is our first tree, we had a lot more ornaments than I expected we would this early on. Each ornament is so unique and special. Decorating the tree while dancing like a loon to Christmas music has always been a big family tradition for me.

Daddy made the doggy/owner snowman, Corey made the cube snowman, and I made the Totoro snowman. It was such a treat to have the beautiful snow.

Even the bird dawned a festive hat!

I eagerly anticipated Christmas this year. Wait... I do every year! I just love all the traditions, decorations, and celebrations with family. It is a happy time of year. This particular Christmas was special because it was our first Christmas together as a married couple. We woke up at our apartment that morning, opened presents together, and enjoyed our little celebration before we went to Corey's parents' house and then my parents' house after that. It honestly was the best Christmas I have ever had. It felt really nice starting our own traditions together as a new family. While I dearly missed my relatives in Florida this year, it was very special and meaningful to start our first Christmas together off this way. Our families were incredibly generous and we really enjoyed our time with them each of them.

As we approached Christmas evening, we received yet another gift that day. It started to snow! In my 23 years on this planet, I have never seen a white Christmas. It hasn't snowed in this area on Christmas day since 1947. It was the perfect way to end the perfect Christmas... But wait! There's more. :)

I get much more joy out of giving rather than receiving... but I have to say, I was completely blown away by Corey's gift to me this year. He bought me the digital SLR camera I have been dreaming about!!! I thought it would take me years to be able to actually own one. Needless to say, I was shocked, giddy as a school girl, and full of tears upon receiving such a thoughtful gift. I cannot wait to learn how to use it properly. Stay tuned for photos with my new toy!

A Warm Treat for a Chilly Day: Japanese Noodle Soup

I did not realize how much I would love cooking until I got married. I get into a very zen-like state while cooking and it is actually quite relaxing for me (cooking for company is another story!). If my husband's tummy is happy, I am happy. My mum is an AMAZING cook and that must be where the passion spawned from. She cooked for our family pretty much every single night growing up and I loved it. I can always count on a delicious treat when I visit home for dinner. My mother-in-law is about to get her culinary degree at the New England Culinary Institute and is also a very skilled cook. Needless to say, I am surrounded by really talented palates. I have A LOT to learn before I get anywhere near their levels!

I like making this Japanese noodle soup on cold days for us. You can add or take out any ingredients that you please in order to suit your taste buds. Don't be afraid to experiment. We like ours spicy, so beware if you are not fond of hot dishes!

Total Ingredients:

* 1/2 lb. Asian noodles. I usually use udon noodles, but you can also use soba or ramen noodles.
* One 3-pk of thin sliced chicken breasts
* 2 Cans of clear chicken broth
* Ginger root
* Ground ginger
* Soy sauce
* Hot sesame oil
* Mirin (Japanese sweet cooking rice wine)
* Rice vinegar
* Ground cayenne pepper (red pepper)
* Chili garlic sauce
* Honey
* Narutomaki (Japanese fish cake)
* 2 Eggs (per serving)
* Green onions
* Bean Sprouts
* Sesame seeds

***Note: You can find the more unusual ingredients at your local Asian market.

1.) Mix the following ingredients in a bowl to make the chicken marinade.

Chicken marinade:
* 2 tbsp soy sauce
* 1 tsp hot sesame oil
* 1 tsp mirin
* 1/2 tsp ginger root
* 1/2 tsp ground ginger
* 1/2 tsp rice vinegar
* 1 tbsp honey

2.) Cut the chicken into thin, long slices and add it to the marinade. Place that bowl in the fridge for ~20 minutes. Stir every 5-8 minutes to coat chicken evenly.

3.) While marinating chicken, cook the eggs. To make what I consider to be the perfect eggs (not completely cooked, but not extremely runny), follow these instructions:

a.) Place eggs in pot and put in just enough water to cover the eggs.
b.) Shake some salt in to prevent the eggs from cracking.
c.) Put them on the highest heat, cover pot, and watch carefully.
d.) Once it begins to boil, turn off the heat immediately and leave the eggs on the burner. Set your timer to 4 minutes at this point.
e.) After 4 minutes, run cold water over your eggs and remove the shell when they are cool enough to touch.

4.) You should still have some time before your meat is done marinating, so take this opportunity to prepare some of your ingredients. Wash the green onions bean sprouts. Chop up the green onions (It is easiest to use clean scissors). Slice your narutomaki at an angle and leave it out until your meal is ready so it has time to defrost.

5.) Put the stove burner on medium and swirl a bit of canola oil into your skillet. Allow the skillet to warm, then pour in chicken with marinade and keep a close eye on it. Move the chicken around until it is all white and it should be ready. Since the meat is sliced thinly, this shouldn't take very long.

6.) While you are waiting for your chicken to cook, begin boiling two cans of chicken broth + 3 1/2 cups of water. Cook your noodles as directed on the package. My udon noodles take 4 minutes.

7.) Add the following ingredients to the noodles after they are done cooking. Stir and allow it to sit for a minute.

* 2 tbsp soy sauce
* 2 tsp hot sesame oil
* 2 tsp mirin
* 1/2 tsp ginger root
* 1 tsp ground ginger
* 1 tbsp honey
* 1 tsp cayenne pepper
* 1/2 tbsp chili garlic sauce

8.) Put noodles in a deep bowl with a generous amount of broth. Garnish with green onions, bean sprouts, eggs cut in half, narutomaki, the chicken you cooked, and sesame seeds. This recipe makes approximately 4 servings.

9.) Enjoy!

Fall, Family, Food, and Friends (in no particular order)

The leaves were so vibrant this year!
It may have something to do with the long and humid summer we had.

I simply cannot believe that fall is finally here! I know that the official season started a while ago, but we haven't been feeling the temperatures in North Carolina until recently. After what felt like the hottest summer we've had in a long time, I am proud to announce fall's arrival. What does this mean? Crisp air, delicious tea, bundling up, pink noses, cute boots, and best of all... the holidays! Hm, I think I'll make any excuse to snuggle closer to my husband!

Thanksgiving was fantastic! Mum is the best cook in the world and she did not disappoint this year. I honestly dream about her Thanksgiving meals (especially the pumpkin souffle)! I have so much to be thankful for and I do not take it for granted for even a second. Each moment on this planet is precious to me and I am blessed with the best of family and friends.

It is tradition for our family to pick out our Christmas tree the weekend following Thanksgiving. This year was a little different because Corey and I picked out our first tree, just for us! It is quirky and adorable and I am overdosing on its delicious aroma as we speak.

Ah, I am a Christmas nut. Let the decorating and festivities begin!

Splendid Fall Weddings

I wasn't able to get many photos, but I did snag this shot of the bride looking out the window while her guests arrived. The dress was PERFECT for her! I also had to get a photo of the bouquet, which was very appropriate for fall and had some really unusual flowers! I loved it!

I was a bridesmaid in a wedding this weekend for dear friends of ours. I met the groom over five years ago right when I started college and he has been a very supportive friend to me. It has been wonderful to see him fall in love and find such a beautiful person to spend the rest of his life with. She sure made a gorgeous bride! The entire evening was magical and they even hired a caricature artist to draw pictures of the guests (um, AWESOME!).

The hubby got this shot of the other bride and groom from their October wedding since I was in this wedding party too. I love they way her dress cascaded down!

My close friend from band in high school got married this fall as well. She used apple red as her color scheme and it was very pleasing to the eye! She also picked a great mate who is a super down-to-earth fellow. Corey and I definitely approve! As you can see, their wedding was outdoors and they had such pretty sunlight coming through the trees during their ceremony. I wish I could have gotten more photos of both of these special days, but I was too busy having fun!

Ah, I love weddings. :)

Happy Halloween!

I dressed up as a kokeshi doll.
I attempted to make a wig out of felt for it, but it ended up looking ridiculous!
Yes, I do realize that my kimono is way too short, but we literally threw these costumes together
and I thought my orangey-red kimono would be appropriate for the holiday. :D

This is the fabric I picked out to make the obi (the sash around the waist).

These are kokeshi dolls. I believe that I have mentioned them in a post before, but they are little wooden dolls that used to be given out as souvenirs at hot springs in Japan. I adore them!

I bought this kokeshi fabric bag at a craft fair a few years ago. I wish I could remember the woman's name to give her credit! I carried this around as well as a kokeshi doll while I was dressed up.

So... I am guessing you have no idea what Corey is? He is a "Japanese Salary Man After Work" whose typical activity would include social drinking with sake (hence the prop below this).

This was originally supposed to be a hat for Corey,
but he ended up using it as a shield across his back (more manly, I suppose?).
We used some insanely heavy duty glue to keep the sake attached to the tray.

Candy Sushi

These are easy (but messy) to make and a lot of fun!
I decided to include onigiri (rice balls) as well.

The roe (fish eggs) are little raspberry candies that I chopped the ends off of
and the nori (seaweed) is fruit roll-up.

The soy sauce is actually chocolate that you can dip your sushi in if you please!
The wasabi is just a piece of fruit roll-up.

Our friends had us over last night for a cake/birthday party, so I decided to make candy sushi! It was fun to create, but extremely messy! Thank you to my dear husband for helping me. This is definitely a two-person project or you will end up very frustrated with sticky hands!

Here is how to make the rice krispy treats:

- 6 cups of rice krispies
- 3 tablespoons of butter
- 1 bag of marshmallows (10 oz package)

1.) Put the marshmallows and butter together in a microwave-safe bowl and plop them in for 2 minutes. Stir and then let them cook for another minute in the microwave.

2.) Pour in the rice krispies and stir like a mad woman (or mad man).

3.) Get ready to get messy! Rub butter all over your hands so it sticks less and begin forming your desired shapes.

4.) Add candy and get creative!

5.) Devour the deliciousness and top it off with a smile.

I would imagine these are great to make with your kids. Children love any excuse to get dirty and consume candy! :D

Honeymoon in Kauai

It was my first time snorkeling!

There were so many memorable meals on this trip - we ate like kings!

I noticed a lot of interesting and exotic looking vegetation on the island.

This is what we looked out on while we ate at a wonderful Japanese restaurant. They had traditional style seating and decor, so we were really excited to find it. Many of the buildings are open to the natural elements in Hawaii. Even the Marriott lobby had no enclosing walls.

I love this man!

It was fascinating to see how much the scenery changed as you traveled throughout the island.

I wish I could say this is unusual, but we quite often act like silly dorks. :)

Our hotel had an amazing koi pond with an abundant amount of fish. Their colors are so vibrant! Feeding time was a treat to observe because they would literally be flipping out of the water and on top of each other in order to get their well deserved snack!

The top picture is of Corey in the gardens at the Marriott. We so enjoyed strolling through this
beautiful area every day. The bottom scene really reminds me of photos I have seen of Japan.

Corey was absolutely in Heaven here! He plays ukulele, so he was like a
kid in a candy shop when we found this place. :)

We aren't big on tacky souvenirs, so we brought home this beautiful stone that was found
while enjoying our time there. I love it and all its silly little holes (it gives it such character!)
Our tiny piece of Hawaii now sits proudly on my favorite leaf plate. :)

We went to Kauai, Hawaii for our Honeymoon (thanks to my wonderful in-laws!) and we could not have been more content with this memorable trip. When discussing which island to go to, we came upon our decision because it is the least commercial island with a lot of natural attractions and it is also where many of the natives reside (who could not have been more friendly!).

We made it our mission to focus on enjoying each others' company, eating well, and taking in all of the natural beauty that the island has to offer. I would not change a thing! It was the first time in my life I felt as if I could let go of every single concern, worry, or motive to do something productive and that was such a refreshing feeling. It was an adventure and we created many memories that just the two of us can share forever.

I often close my eyes and imagine us back there... Mahalo, my love.
